Indigenous Resource Management Organization

Indigenous Resource Management Organization (IREMO) is a registered non-government and nonprofit civil society organization based in Marsabit County. In 2013 a group of like-minded pastoralist women and men, got together to establish an organization, for addressing the most urgent and pressing needs of the people of Marsabit County. The organization particularly targets women, children, youths and person living with disability

The type of activities undertaken by the organization ranges from advocacy to capacity building, with focus remaining on the deprived and marginalized segments of the society. Whereas in terms of operations what characterizes IREMO’s functioning are its efforts to (a) enlist involvement of the locals when initiating activities at the grass root level; and (b) mobilize women, girls and indigenous communities  for improving income base at household level, bringing peace, tolerance, and development in society. 

IREMO enjoys a diverse portfolio, characterized by partnership with organizations like The Christensen Fund -TCF, The Girl Generation-TGG, Local to Global -L2GP, Christian Aid through consortium with CIFA, Pan Africa Climate Justice Alliance- PACJA, and GREEN AFRICA.

Our Values

IREMO believes and upholds the fundamental freedoms and rights as contained in the International Charter on Human Rights and The Constitution of Kenya. These rights and values include:

What IREMO Does

Influenced by the new development paradigm, which puts people before things, IREMO follows a participatory approach in every sphere of its work. The traditional knowledge of the rural poor and women opinions are valued and respected, and there is confidence that all people are capable of leading their responses. On a practical level, the fundamental drive of this approach is decentralization, inclusion and empowerment.

For a community to be able to work for its own development and reduce its dependency there is a need for full & inclusive involvement at all stages of the development cycle. The participation of communities in identification, planning, management, implementation and evaluation of projects is a key factor in IREMO work. Internally a participatory approach is adopted in managing the affairs of IREMO.

Visibly, IREMO role as a “change agent” helps to develop community management structures that are capable of managing their own development. This increases the ability of the community to demand accountability in all their affairs, from leaders and officials. It reinforces the community’s belief in the value of their own development choices and efforts. These community management structures are not parallel structures, but are built upon traditional institutions, promoting equitable representation and participation

Human resource development is an essential part of our development work. This means ensuring that the community is trained and skilled, as well as organized, to maximize the potential of the community to take hold of its own development.

IREMO strongly believes in maximizing its impact by transferring field experiences into knowledge to influence the development policies and practices of NGOs, donors and government agencies. This is important for working towards the long-term goal of eradicating poverty.

Our Overall Objective

The overall development objective of IREMO is enhanced ability in the target communities to tackle their own economic, social and environmental problems for sustainable community development.

  1. To educate the deprived and under privilege common folk about the basic human rights and find basis to incorporate their efforts and mobilization to achieve maximum output.
  2. Promote Gender equality.
  3. To develop and organize women youth and children particularly to acquire their rights to educations and improve their health and earnings
  1. Increased household income and economic activities.
  2. Organizing issue-specific and objective-oriented campaigns building social pressure to influence decision-making at County and national levels in favour of deprived, marginalized and vulnerable segments of the community.
  3. Conservation of natural resources, bio-diversity and environmental protection issues through advocacy, networking.

Our strength is our approach. We find out what people are doing, and help them to do it better. Through innovative thinking and technical knowledge, we enable communities to build on their skills and experience to produce practical solutions to their most pressing needs. We believe the right idea can transform lives forever, allow people to live in dignity and protect the world.

We believe that no organization alone can bring about the changes needed to benefit everyone. To make the change happen, we will engage and inspire practitioners, policy-makers, funders and communities to work together, so our work can impact the lives of far more people than we can reach directly.
